¡2011 ya empezó!

Estuve tres días de esta semana en París como orador invitado a la "8th european conference on the challenges of design in Europe". ¡Tremendo arranque de año! Es un privilegio poder participar de este tipo de encuentros, sobre todo por el roce con colegas del mundo entero y la chance de aprender de sus buenas prácticas.

Hacía un frío peludo en París pero casi ni me enteré porque la conferencia transcurrió enterita en la Cité des Sciences et L´Industrie. Por esas extrañas cabriolas que da la vida estoy participando cada vez más de estas charlas y puedo afirmar que el encuentro parisino fue bien interesante. Hubo un buen mix de experiencias públicas y privadas, incluyendo la participación de diseñadores ya establecidos (Bruce Wood, Vincent Créance, Adriaan Debruyne y Jean-René Talopp) y emprendedores de variado pelaje (Extremis, Tsé Tsé y Võru ´82).

También pudimos escuchar a Deborah Dawton, CEO de la Design Business Association del Reino Unido, entidad a la que habría que mirar muy de cerca si pretendemos impulsar la creación de una asociación de diseño en Argentina. Me llamó particularmente la atención el curso "Re-Imagining Leadership" que desarrollaron hace poco (¡veremos si es replicable!). Entre otras conceptos, Deborah nos puso a los gestores del mundo del diseño en aprietos al afirmar que tenemos la obligación de ser al menos tan buenos y creativos como a la gente a la que supuestamente estamos asistiendo...

Fui el único participante no europeo del encuentro. Hubo muchas referencias a la crisis en el Viejo Continente, a India y a China y casi ninguna mención a América Latina (salvo por Brasil). El encuentro sirvió para generar nuevos contactos para nuestro Festival Internacional de Diseño y mi presentación fue -modestamente- muy bien recibida por el auditorio (ayudó mucho cerrar mi ponencia con un corto de 3 minutos sobre el pasado Festival que recién terminamos de editar).

Queda pendiente el pensar maneras de innovar con relación al formato de estas conferencias (algo sobre lo que escribimos hace tiempo). Creo que se podría haber aprovechado mucho más el contenido si hubiera habido una plataforma horizontal de participación que incluyera, entre otras herramientas, a las redes sociales (¡nadie estaba en Twitter!).

Leyendo un artículo viejo del Economist recordé la visita que hice en mayo de este año a la Médiathèque de Neuilly, por recomendacion de Edgardo Malaroda, Ministro de la Embajada de Argentina en Francia. Mucho más atrás en la memoria están las miles horas invertidas en bibliotecas muy siglo XX (Nacional, Di Tella, UBA, la del Congreso, la del Maestro...) que parecían orgullosas de su carácter unplugged y del esnobismo de los libros.

Ahora que volvemos una y otra vez sobre la letanía del fin de los libros y lloramos a los lectores perdidos, vale la pena justamente repensar a estos lugares como espacios públicos realmente inclusivos, abiertos a toda la comunidad, simples y fundamentalmente divertidos.

Laramie County’s libraries are the best of an excellent lot. Their flagship is a three-storey, zinc-clad edifice in Cheyenne, a town best-known for its annual rodeo. In addition to a third of a million volumes, the building contains well-equipped meeting rooms and computer labs. It has a large area oriented towards teenagers which is often busy, in part because of the librarians’ tolerant attitude to food. In all, about three-quarters of Laramie County’s 86,000 residents hold library cards.

Visita a la Médiathèque de Neuilly con Edgardo

The City of Paris and the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs offer a residents’ programme at Récollets International Accommodation and Exchange Centre, a prestigious building situated on the banks of Saint Martin Canal, in the heart of Paris, to foreign artists specialized in any discipline.

This programme is targeted to confirmed writers and artists who will be selected by a board of examiners on the basis of a project they would like to develop in Paris during their stay. This project can be carried out at the invitation of a Paris art institution within the framework of a programme of cultural cooperation or as a personal artistic research approach.

The winners are hosted in one of the 6 studios, for a 3 or 6 months period. At the end of their stay, the artists must write a report on their stay.

PROFILE OF APPLICANTS 
 At least 5 years professional experience. 
 Proof of a participation in international festivals of performing arts (theatre, dance), a participation in important international artistic events (biennial contemporary art festivals, exhibitions in international museums), or publication of scripts.

DISCIPLINE Visual arts, performing arts, literature.

LENGTH OF STAY 
3 months. The board of examiners can exceptionally decide in favour of a longer stay for a specific project (notified by a schedule).

CONDITIONS OF STAY 
Winners will be accommodated in a studio put at their disposal by the City of Paris at the Récollets International Exchange and Accommodation Centre; 150-154 rue du Faubourg Saint Martin – 75010 Paris. The Department of Cultural Affairs will help the selected artists to make the necessary steps in Paris and foster contacts with Paris cultural institutions.

AID TO PROJECTS 
A 1500 € monthly allowance is allocated by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs to support the artists’ projects, and an insurance in case of illness during the stay.

ROUND-TRIP TICKETS 
Travel costs remain at the expense of the artist. However it will be possible for the artists to make a request to the cultural services department of French Embassies in their respective countries.
